This guide explains how to set TinyMCE as the default text editor in Moodle.
This setting affects the editor used in activity descriptions, labels, and other content areas.
Who can change this setting #
Only administrators can change the default text editor for the site.
Teachers cannot override this setting unless specifically permitted.
Step 1: Go to the text editor settings #
Navigate to:
Site administration → Plugins → Text editors → Manage editors
You will see a list of available editors installed on the site.
Step 2: Enable TinyMCE #
Make sure TinyMCE HTML editor is enabled.
If it is disabled, enable it using the controls provided.
Step 3: Set TinyMCE as the default editor #
Navigate to:
Site administration → Plugins → Text editors → TinyMCE HTML editor
Locate the setting for the default editor configuration.
Set TinyMCE as the default editor for the site.
Save the changes.
Step 4: Verify the change #
Open any activity that includes a content editor, such as:
- A Label
- A Page
- A Video Lesson Activity description
Confirm that the editor interface shown is TinyMCE.
Important notes #
- The default editor applies site-wide.
- Users may still be able to select a different editor in their profile settings, depending on permissions.
- If multiple editors are enabled, Moodle allows users to choose their preferred editor.
