This guide explains how to restrict access to other activities in a Moodle course based on Video Lesson completion.
This allows you to ensure that students watch a video before they can access quizzes, assignments, or other activities.
Before you begin #
Make sure that:
- A Video Lesson Activity exists in the course
- Video completion is enabled for that activity
- Completion is based on watch percentage or another completion rule

Step 1: Configure completion for the Video Lesson Activity #
- Open the Video Lesson Activity settings.
- Scroll to the Activity completion section.
- Enable completion tracking and select Require watch percentage.
- Set the percentage students must watch before the activity is marked complete.
- Save the activity.
Completion must be working correctly before it can be used to restrict access.
Step 2: Open the activity you want to restrict #
Go to the activity that should be unlocked after the video is completed.
This could be:
- A quiz
- An assignment
- Another Video Lesson
- Any Moodle activity that supports access restrictions
Edit the activity settings.
Step 3: Add a restriction based on activity completion #
- Scroll to the Restrict access section.
- Click Add restriction and choose Activity completion.
- Select the Video Lesson Activity from the list.
- Set the condition to must be marked complete.
Step 4: Choose how the restriction is displayed #
Decide how the restricted activity should appear to students before completion.
You can choose to:
- Show the activity but prevent access
- Hide the activity entirely until completion
This choice affects student visibility but not the restriction logic.
Step 5: Save and test the restriction #
Save the activity settings.
View the course as a student.

Restricting access using video completion is commonly used for:
- Requiring students to watch an introduction video before a quiz
- Unlocking assignments after mandatory training videos
- Enforcing linear learning paths
- Compliance and certification workflows
Important notes #
- Restrictions are evaluated per student
- Completion depends on the configured completion rules
- Students cannot bypass restrictions without completing the video
- Teachers and administrators are not affected by these restrictions
