This article explains what “watch percentage” means in the Video Lesson Activity, how it is calculated, and how it affects activity completion.
What is watch percentage? #
Watch percentage represents how much of a video a learner has actually watched, expressed as a percentage of the total video duration.

For example:
- A 10-minute video
- Required watch percentage: 85%
- Learner must watch at least 8.5 minutes of the video for completion
This value is used to determine whether a Video Lesson activity can be marked as complete.
Can learners watch in multiple sessions? #
Yes.
Watch percentage is cumulative:
- Learners can watch part of the video
- Leave the activity
- Return later and continue watching
Progress is remembered until the required percentage is reached.
What happens when the required percentage is reached? #
Once the learner reaches the configured watch percentage:
- The Video Lesson activity is marked complete
- Moodle course progress updates
- Restricted activities (quizzes, certificates, lessons) can unlock
- Completion appears in reports and dashboards
Summary #
Watch percentage ensures that:
- Completion reflects actual video viewing
- Learners engage meaningfully with content
- Video lessons can be used reliably for compliance and progression
